The lighthouse of Aforesmenos

The Lighthouse of Cape or Aforesmenos is located 27 km north of Agios Nikolaos, in the region of Vrouhas village and close to the wind park in Baboura. It’s a specifically beautiful place, which we can easily visit if the weather allows it.

The name “Aforesmenos” has been taken from a legend which is related to the constant troubled sea. According to the legend, after Kaiafas crusified Jesus, he began his trip to Rome in order to meet king Ceasar.
However, during the trip he died from a disease that spread in his ship. Because he was not a king, he should be buried normally. When his sailors approached Chomatistra inlet, the sea got wild. Despite that, the sailors managed to get to the shore and bury Kaiafa. The cape was named “aforesmenos” because this is the place where the man who crusified Jesus is buried and because since then, the sea has never been calm again. Many nautical guides of the 19th century were suggesting to the captains to sail one mile away from the cape.

The wild scenery of the area is characteristic of Crete, with bald mountains, craggy shores and so windy. It’s one of the most beautiful places to visit and swim.
