SPINALONGA
ISLAND
Spinalonga or Kalidona is a small island of 0,100 square kilometres, which closes from the northern side the Gulf of Elounda in the minicipality of Agios Nikolaos, Lasithi prefecture, of the island of Crete.
It was perfectly fortified by the Venetians both from a structural and architectural point of view, but also aesthetically. Until today, the place preserves its beauty.
Spinalonga island is considered to be one of the most important sights in Crete, with such historical significance within the centuries. This fabled isle was one of the most important venetian castles of Crete, as it was mentioned above. However, it was known as the “Island of the Lepers”, because the lepers from Crete and the rest of Greece were isolated there until 1957. For many decades Spinalonga was untapped.
When numerous tourists expressed their interest, systematic restoration and reparation of the old buildings, the venetian fortesses, the old houses and the roads began. The Ministry of Culture has submitted for the accession of Spinalonga in the catalogue of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.
