The man who inspired and executed the project was the French chief of Spinalonga Emile- Amedee, Dupourque.

The construction began in the 27th of February in 1897 and it was finished in next year’s spring. Its completion had as a result the development of maritime trade between Elounda and Spinalonga and Agios Nikolaos, while nowadays it makes easier the crossing of fishing and tourist boats.
